The formatting of your Extended Essay is important--some of it will be me and my nitpicking (organization of your title page, insisting on a two-part title) and some of it is IB's preference (a History EE must have the RQ in the abstract and in the introduction).
Regardless of whether you find my insights annoying or helpful, please keep in mind that I've done this quite a bit... and it isn't my goal to lead you astray! It is my goal to make sure you write a sound and decent paper. |
The Title Page
My version isn't an official MLA title page (which requires everything to be centered); however, it's neat, clean, and logical.

The Abstract
The abstract of your paper should follow the guidelines IB sets forth in the guide. Each guide will let you know what is required in the abstract (i.e. History). Your first step is definitely to read that guide!
Next, you'll need some solid samples. They will show you that an abstract takes a personal tone (of interaction with the paper and subject). The abstract has it's own word count (300 words) and should be as close to that word count as possible. |
The Table of Contents
A table of contents is really a courtesy you offer to the reader. It allows you to show your organization right off the bat, and guide the reader in the ways of your awesome research!
Your abstract does not get a place on the ToC. And, the table of contents is actually page number three in your essay. That's right: title page, abstract, table of contents! Those three pages are all single spaced (my preference). |
